Anti-EU champion Farage quits after vote

The leader of the insurgent right-wing UK Independence Partysaid on Monday he was stepping down after realising his ambition to win a vote for Britain to leave the EU, the latest twist in a dramatic reshaping of the nation's politics.

The departure of brash former commodities trader Nigel Faragewould sideline one of the most outspoken and effective anti-EU campaigners from the debate about how to sever Britain's ties with the other 27 countries in the bloc.

Police find record cocaine haul in horse's head

New Zealand Customs and Police have seized 35 kg (77lbs) of cocaine stuffed inside a large diamante-encrusted horse's head that was mailed from Mexico.

The $10 million discovery, the largest cocaine seizure made in New Zealand, came in May when the 400 kg air freight package was delivered to an address in Auckland where police were carrying out surveillance.

Rain, floods kill over 100 people, wipe out crops

Severe recent flooding across central and southern Chinahas killed around 100 people, damaged more than 1.5 million hectares of cropland and led to direct economic losses of more than 20 billion yuan ($3 billion), the government has said.

Chinese Premier Li Keqiang traveled on Tuesday to Anhui, one of the hardest-hit provinces, where he met residents and encouraged officials to do everything they could to protect lives and livelihoods. Li was also to visit Hunan province.

BREAKING : Police retire 21 AIGs

The Police Service Commission has approved the retirement of 21 Assistant Inspectors-General of Police who were senior to the new acting IG, Idris Ibrahim, before his appointment.

With this retrenchment, majority of the experienced officers in the Force may have been swept off.

The affected AIGs include, Bala Hassan; Yahaya Ardo; Irmiya Yarima; Danladi Mshebwala; Tambari Mohammed ; Bala Magaji Nasarawa; MUsa Abdulsalam; Adisa Bolanta and Mohammed Gana.
