Biafra: Ruling On Nnamdi Kanu’s Bail Adjourned

The ruling on a bail application by the director of the Indigenous People Of Biafra, Nnamdi Kanu has been adjourned to Thursday, December 17.

At a sitting before Justice Ademola Adeniyi of a Federal High Court in Abuja, the prosecuting counsel Moses Idakwo prayed the court to disregard the bail application by the accused person.

Idakwo said that Kanu is accused of terrorism and terrorism financing and investigations on the matter is currently ongoing by the operatives of the State Security Service (SSS).

The prosecuting counsel said that from SSS investigations account activities and bank account details of Kanu has shown that monies in dollars and pounds sterling were used for terrorism financing against Nigeria.

Idakwo added that the accused person has a dual citizenship and could easily escape if granted bail although he said that the bail conditions given to Kanu by the magistrate court is yet to be met.

But in his objection, the defending counsel Egechukwu Obetta argued that the claims made by his colleagues were “speculative”.

Obetta said that his client had since offered to meet all bail conditions set by the magistrate court but the offer was rejected by the security agency.

He added that the SSS had on four different occasions flouted orders made by the magistrate court over the release of Kanu.

The defending counsel said his client, Kanu had already spent 90 days in the custody of the SSS and a request to continue detaining Kanu for another 90 days as allowed by Section 27 of the Terrorism Act is a denial of the fundamental rights of his client.

After listening to prayers and replies by both counsels, Adeniyi adjourned the case to Thursday, December 17.

Adeniyi said the adjournment of the matter will give him time to acquaint himself with details of the case.

Kanu was arrested in Lagos by operatives of the SSS on October 14 on his return from United Kingdom.

He was accused of threats to the Nigerian government, involvement with terrorism and terrorism financing.

Since his arrest, there has been various protests by groups agitating for his releases and the actualization of Biafra across the Southeast region of Nigeria.
