Dickson Slams Sylva Over Governorship Election

Ahead of the December 5 governorship election in Bayelsa state, campaigns and verbal attacks have continued to heat up as Governor Seriake Dickson’s camp of the Peoples Democratic Party fired a shot at Timipre Sylva, the All Progressives Congress flag bearer in the forthcoming poll.

The director general of the Bayelsa State Restoration Campaign Organisation of Governor Seriake Dickson, Fred Agbedi during an interview in Yenagoa over the weekend said that the governorship candidate of the APC is not electable and has been rejected by the people of Bayelsa, The Punch reports.

The statement was a clear response to the Sylva campaign team for lashing out at the governor over his recent endorsements for second term in office by some groups and traditional rulers in the state.

Describing the purported endorsements as vanity and a charade, the Sylva campaign team said that Dickson was giving the impression of being popular when he knew full well that his popularity had dropped sharply stressing that such endorsements would not would not in any way make the election favourable to him.

However, Agbedi who is also a member of the House of Representatives does not agree with the former governor’s campaign team. He said that the acceptability of Dickson was genuine.

On the issue of former APC members who returned to the PDP Agbedi sat that they did the right thing by decamping to the ruling party in the state.

The director general said that the action the returnees took was the best stressing that the APC candidate has been rejected in Bayelsa in the full glare of every Bayelsa person.

“The APC candidate, Timipre Sylva, has been rejected by the people of Bayelsa,” he added.

Subsequently in his reaction to Dickson’s endorsements for a second term in office by some groups and traditional rulers in the state, Chief Nathan Egba, the director of media and publicity, SICO, noted that the state governor was only just deceiving himself.

Egba said: “Before the presidential election, there was a spate of endorsements. Every group, House of Assembly, local government chairmen and traditional rulers that endorsed former President Goodluck Jonathan also endorsed Dickson. And now, there is another round of endorsements.

“The simple question now is: have those earlier endorsements expired? And if those have expired, what is the life span of these new ones? Are they not going to expire before the December 5 governorship election?

“You can see that these endorsements are an exercise in futility. And as you know, vanity upon vanity is vanity. He is engaged in vanity. It is a charade. Dickson is trying to create an impression of a popularity which he lacks. Dickson’s popularity has plummeted and he knows it.”

He said that the repeated rounds of endorsements of were a clear indication of desperate attempts to create a sense of acceptability among the people of the state.

Meanwhile, there have an on-going plot by the PDP to stop the APC candidate from contesting the December 5 governorship election in the state.
